WEEK 1: ANOINTED, NOT ASSUMED
David’s Calling
Your calling is defined by God’s anointing, not by people’s assumptions.
Day 1: The One Nobody Picked
Have you ever felt overlooked or undervalued, like no one can see your real worth? You're in good company. The book of 1 Samuel describes the journey of David, from a lowly shepherd to a powerful king. Today, we pick up our story at the beginning. God has sent a prophet named Samuel to a family in Bethlehem in order that he would declare one of the sons as the new king, but thankfully, Samuel's expectations aren't the same as God's.
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:6–7 (NIV)
“When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the Lord’s anointed stands here before the Lord.’ But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’”
Even the prophet got it wrong. Samuel walked into Jesse’s house, saw the oldest son, and thought, “That’s the one.” Tall. Strong. Looked the part. But God stopped him immediately: “That’s not how I choose.”
We live in a world that picks people the same way Samuel did. By what’s visible. The person with the most followers, the best grades, the loudest personality, the right look. We measure people by what we can see, and we measure ourselves the same way.
But God says He operates on a completely different metric. He’s not scanning the outside. He’s reading the heart.
That should change how you see yourself. Because every label people have stuck on you, too quiet, too young, too ordinary, too much, none of that is the final word. God’s evaluation doesn’t run through the same filter. He sees what nobody else bothers to look for.
This week, we’re walking through the story of David. A kid who got overlooked by everyone, including his own family, but was handpicked by God. And his story is going to challenge everything you believe about what qualifies someone for a calling.
Reflect: What’s one label or assumption people have placed on you that doesn’t match who you know God made you to be?
Today: Write down one thing people assume about you and one thing God says about you. Carry the second one with you today.
