Day 3: Send for the Shepherd

Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:11–12 (NIV)

“So he asked Jesse, ‘Are these all the sons you have?’ ‘There is still the youngest,’ Jesse answered. ‘He is tending the sheep.’ Samuel said, ‘Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.’ So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, ‘Rise and anoint him; this is the one.’”

God wouldn’t let the process continue without David. Samuel refused to sit down. The whole ceremony waited for the one everybody forgot.

David was out tending sheep. In that culture, shepherding was low-status work. Dirty. Lonely. Invisible. It wasn’t a stepping stone to leadership. It was a dead end, as far as anyone could see.

But here’s what nobody realized: the field was where God was forming David. While his brothers were in the house being evaluated by a prophet, David was in the pasture being prepared by God. The skills he built fighting off lions and bears, the patience he learned watching over wandering animals, the intimacy with God he developed in the silence, all of it was building something.

God’s call often begins in unseen places. Not on stages. Not in front of crowds. In the quiet, unglamorous, nobody-is-watching moments. That’s where faithfulness gets tested, and character gets built.

If you feel like you’re in a field right now, doing work that doesn’t matter, in a season nobody sees, pay attention. God might be doing His most important work in you right there.

Reflect: What’s your “field” right now? The place where you’re serving faithfully, but it feels invisible?

Today: Whatever ordinary responsibility is in front of you today, do it like it matters. Because to God, it does.
