Day 20: Not My Will
Scripture: Luke 22:42 (NIV)
“‘Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.’”
Jesus prayed this in the garden the night before He died. He knew what was coming. The betrayal. The beating. The cross. And He was honest about it: “If there’s another way, I’d take it.” But He didn’t stop there. He surrendered: “Not my will, but yours.”
That prayer is the heartbeat of everything we’ve talked about this month. Calling is real. Purpose is real. But none of it holds together without surrender to the one who gave it to you.
David understood this. Even after being anointed king, he waited years before taking the throne. He had multiple opportunities to seize it by force, but he didn’t. He trusted God’s timing over his own ambition.
Saul didn’t understand it. He grabbed for control, bent the rules, protected his image, and lost everything.
Here’s the gospel that closes this whole series. Jesus had every right to walk away from the cross. He had the authority to call down angels. But He chose surrender. And because He did, you have forgiveness, identity, purpose, and the Spirit of God living in you.
Because of Jesus, you’re called. Anointed. Prepared. Secure in who you are. And the way you keep all of that healthy is by putting the Creator above the call. Every day. In every decision. Not your will, but His.
So go. Walk in your calling. But never forget who it’s for.
Reflect: What would it look like for you to pray “not my will, but yours” over the biggest thing in your life right now?
Today: Spend ten minutes in silence with God. Not asking for anything. Not planning anything. Just being with the Creator. Let that be the posture you carry into everything else.
