David’s Preparation

God uses the ordinary to prepare you for the extraordinary.

Day 6: Back to the Field

Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:12–15 (NIV)

“Now David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons… David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul, but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.”

After being anointed as the future king of Israel, David didn’t move into a palace. He went back to watching sheep. He split his time between serving King Saul with music and running his father’s errands.

If you were just told you’d be the next king, this would feel like a demotion. You’d expect doors to fly open. Instead, David is back in the same field, doing the same job, invisible to everyone except the sheep.

But God wasn’t wasting David’s time. He was building David’s character. The patience David learned watching sheep would serve him when he led people. The faithfulness he practiced in small things was the same faithfulness he’d need for big ones.

We want calling to feel like a launch. God usually makes it feel like a process. And the process is where most people quit, because it doesn’t look like progress.

If you’re in a season where nothing seems to be moving, where you’re doing the same thing every day and wondering if any of it matters, pay attention. God doesn’t promote without preparing. And preparation usually looks like faithfulness in the boring stuff.

Reflect: What’s your “sheep field” right now? The ordinary, unglamorous place where nothing exciting seems to be happening?

Today: Pick one “boring” responsibility today and give it your full effort. Homework. Chores. Practice. Treat it like training, because it is.
