Day 8: Forty Days of Waiting
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:16 (NIV)
“For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.”
Goliath showed up twice a day for forty days. Eighty times, he walked out and mocked Israel’s army. Eighty times, trained soldiers watched and did nothing.
Forty days is a long time to sit in fear. Long enough for the entire army to normalize it. Long enough for inaction to become the default. Nobody was fighting because nobody had fought, and at some point, the waiting itself became the enemy.
Waiting seasons work on you like that. When nothing changes for long enough, you start believing nothing will change. You stop expecting God to move. You settle into whatever’s comfortable, even if comfortable means stuck.
But during those same forty days, God was positioning David. While the army waited in fear, David was on his way with bread and cheese. He didn’t know what he was walking into. He was just being obedient.
Your waiting season isn’t empty. It’s not punishment. God is working in the wait, building your patience, refining your trust, and setting things up that you can’t see from where you’re standing.
Reflect: What’s something you’ve been waiting on that’s tempted you to give up or settle?
Today: Instead of asking God, “When will this change?” ask Him, “What are You building in me while I wait?” Sit with whatever comes to mind.
