Day 2: Passed Over
Scripture: 1 Samuel 16:8–10 (NIV)
“Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, ‘The Lord has not chosen this one either.’ Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, ‘Nor has the Lord chosen this one.’ Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has not chosen these.’”
Seven sons walk by. Seven times, God says no. Seven times, Samuel looks at what seems obvious, and God redirects him.
Now imagine being David. He wasn’t even in the room. His father didn’t think to call him. When a prophet showed up at the house to anoint the next king of Israel, Jesse presented every son except the youngest. David was out in the field doing the work nobody else wanted to do.
That’s a specific kind of pain. Not just being rejected, but being forgotten. Not considered. It’s one thing to compete and lose. It’s another to not even be in the conversation.
Maybe you know that feeling. You weren’t invited. You weren’t picked. People made decisions about your future without asking you. It’s easy to internalize that and think it means something about your worth.
But David’s absence from the room didn’t disqualify him from God’s plan. It just meant the people around him couldn’t see what God already knew. Being overlooked by people doesn’t mean you’ve been overlooked by God.
Reflect: Have you ever been left out of something and wondered if it meant you weren’t good enough? How did that affect how you see yourself?
Today: If you’re in a season of feeling unseen, tell God about it honestly. Then ask Him to remind you that His plan for you doesn’t depend on other people’s awareness.
