Hebrews Part 3: Sleepy ChristianitySample

Are You Awake in Your Faith?
Have you ever found yourself spiritually drowsy—going through the motions of faith without fully engaging your heart? Spiritual sleep doesn’t happen all at once. It creeps in through comfort, distraction, or weariness. The danger isn’t just in missing out on life with God—it’s in drifting so gradually that we don’t even realize we’re off course. Scripture doesn’t just call us to believe—it calls us to stay awake.
If you’ve been in church for any length of time, you’ve seen people nodding off. But far more concerning is when believers drift through life spiritually asleep.
Charles Spurgeon once warned, “Sleepy Christian... you are sleeping while souls are being lost, while Christ is being dishonored, while the devil is grinning at thy sleepy face... Watch, and be sober, that ye may be always up to do your duty.” (1)
The book of Hebrews was written to shake us awake. Likewise, in Revelation 3, Jesus tells the church in Sardis, “Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die... Remember... keep it, and repent.” (Revelation 3:2-3, ESV)
Hebrews shows Jesus not as a harsh judge, but as a loving High Priest who warns us with urgency, not anger. Like a good parent who raises their voice to keep a child from harm, God’s warnings are acts of mercy.
The entire outline of Hebrews is a series of heartfelt warnings to everyone who hears them, including you. Multiple Bible scholars see the following outline of the book as a series of warnings and pleadings:
- Don't abandon God's Word
- Don’t harden your heart
- Don’t stop growing spiritually
- Don’t turn your back on Jesus
- Don’t reject God’s authority
Again and again, we’re told: don’t drift away—wake up.
We stress over lost time or money. But when did you last examine your walk with God?
