Hebrews Part 3: Sleepy Christianity

DAY 2 OF 18

What Direction is Your Heart Headed?

There’s a sobering reality in Scripture: not everyone who starts with Jesus finishes with Him. This isn’t about seasons of doubt or sincere questions—it’s about a willful, persistent rejection of the truth after once embracing it. Hebrews offers one of the clearest and most urgent warnings in all of Scripture—not to frighten us, but to wake us up before it’s too late. Spiritual drift may begin subtly, but if left unchecked, it leads to total separation from the very God who once felt so near to us.

Christian teachers have long used the word “apostasy” to describe this spiritual falling away. A Bible dictionary defines it as, “Turning against God, as evidenced by abandonment and repudiation of former beliefs. The term generally refers to a deliberate renouncing of the faith by a once sincere believer rather than a state of ignorance or mistaken knowledge.” (1)

This warning from Hebrews is directed at those who are on a path toward destruction—those who’ve sat in church, tasted truth, and maybe even served in ministry but are now turning away. The message is clear: repent before it's too late. If you’ve been hurt by a church or its leaders, don’t let that pain keep you from Christ. Pride, bitterness, and disappointment can lead us further from God than we realize.

But no wound is worth your soul. This is a loving call to stop running, humble yourself, repent, and return to Christ and His Church. God loves you—and it’s not too late.

God’s warnings are not signs of rejection—they’re invitations to return. If you’re discouraged, drifting, or on the verge of walking away, hear this: God hasn’t given up on you. But the longer you wait, the harder your heart can become. Don’t confuse previous spiritual activity with lasting faith. Don’t mistake proximity to the things of God for true transformation. The door is still open.

Is your life proving your faith or exposing your fall?
