Day 13: Take Off the Armor
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:38–40 (NIV)
“Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. ‘I cannot go in these,’ he said to Saul, ‘because I am not used to them.’ So he took them off.”
Saul tried to help David by giving him his armor. On the surface, it made sense. You’re going into battle? Here, wear this. But Saul’s armor didn’t fit David. It was heavy, awkward, and built for someone else’s body.
This is one of the most relatable moments in the story. How many times have you tried to fight your battles wearing someone else’s armor? Copying how someone else talks, leads, or presents themselves because you thought that’s what it takes to succeed?
Comparison is just borrowed armor. It looks like it should help, but it slows you down. You can’t be effective pretending to be someone you’re not. God didn’t design you to be a copy. He designed you to be you, and He already equipped you with what you need.
David took the armor off. He picked up his sling, five stones, and his staff. The same tools he’d used in the field. Unimpressive to everyone watching. But perfectly suited for what God had prepared him to do.
Stop trying to look like someone else’s version of success. God gave you your own sling and stones. Trust what He put in your hands.
Reflect: Where in your life are you wearing “someone else’s armor”? Trying to be something you’re not to fit in or measure up?
Today: Name one thing about yourself, a gift, a personality trait, a perspective, that you’ve been downplaying. Thank God for it. Then use it today without apology.
