WEEK 3: KNOW WHO YOU ARE
David’s Identity
You can’t walk in your calling if you don’t know who you are.
Day 11: The Brother Who Tried to Stop Him
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17:28–30 (NIV)
“When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, ‘Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.’ ‘Now what have I done?’ said David. ‘Can’t I even speak?’ He then turned away.”
Before David ever faced a giant, he faced his brother. And his brother went straight for his identity.
Eliab didn’t just question David’s presence. He attacked his character. Called him conceited. Called his heart wicked. Dismissed his purpose. Reduced him to “those few sheep.” In one sentence, Eliab tried to tell David who he was and what he was worth.
People will do this to you. Sometimes the loudest opposition doesn’t come from enemies. It comes from people who are supposed to know you. Family. Friends. People in your circle who project their own frustration onto your obedience.
But watch what David does. He doesn’t fight back. He doesn’t defend himself. He doesn’t try to prove Eliab wrong. He says, “What have I done?” and turns away.
That’s identity security. When you know who you are, you don’t need other people to validate it. You don’t need to win every argument or correct every misperception. You can walk away from people who don’t see what God is doing in you without losing yourself in the process.
Reflect: Who in your life has tried to define you by their assumptions instead of God’s truth? How did it affect you?
Today: The next time someone misreads you or criticizes your character unfairly, practice David’s response: don’t defend. Turn away. Let God be your defense.
