Piedmontese New Testament

Piedmontese, known as piemontèis, is spoken in the Piedmont region of north-west Italy. It is sometimes considered a separate language, and sometimes a dialect of Italian.

The first New Testament was translated into Piedmontese by P. Bert and P. Geymet. It was printed for the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) under the care of John Charles Beckwith (1789–1862), who had worked amongst the Waldensian (Vaudois) community. The main translation was completed in 1834. Although the front panel says 1834, some corrections were made and it was printed in 1835. The title was: 'L Testament Neuv dë Nossëgnour Gesu-Crist tradout in lingua Piemonteisa. It was published by Dai Torchj di Moyes of Castle Street, Leicester Square, London. In 1840 the book of Psalms was also translated by John Charles Beckwith, who lived in Piedmont, married a Waldensian and died at Torre Pellice.
