Day 19: Jealousy Will Wreck You
Scripture: 1 Samuel 18:7–9 (NIV)
“As they danced, they sang: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.’ Saul was very angry; this refrain displeased him greatly. ‘They have credited David with tens of thousands,’ he thought, ‘but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?’ And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.”
David defeats Goliath and the whole nation celebrates. But instead of joining the celebration, Saul starts counting. He compares his numbers to David’s and loses his mind.
This is what happens when your identity is tied to your performance. The moment someone outshines you, it feels like a threat. Saul couldn’t celebrate what God did through David because he was too busy measuring it against himself.
Jealousy doesn’t always look like anger. Sometimes it looks like withdrawal. Silence. Subtle competition. Watching someone else succeed and feeling something bitter rise up in you instead of joy. It’s the quiet conviction that their win means your loss.
But calling doesn’t work that way. God doesn’t run out of purpose. Someone else’s anointing doesn’t diminish yours. When you’re secure in who God made you, you can celebrate what He’s doing in other people without feeling threatened by it.
Saul’s jealousy didn’t just ruin his relationship with David. It ruined him. It consumed his leadership, his peace, and eventually his life. Comparison is that corrosive.
Reflect: Is there someone in your life whose success makes you feel insecure or resentful? What would it take to genuinely celebrate them?
Today: Find someone today who’s doing well and encourage them. Not performatively. Genuinely. Let their success be something you cheer for instead of something you measure against.
