DAY 17 OF 20

Day 17: Obedience Over Sacrifice

Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:22–23 (NIV)

“But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.’”

Saul tried to spin his disobedience as worship. He kept the best animals and said, “I was going to sacrifice them to God.” It sounded spiritual. But Samuel cut through it: obedience is better than sacrifice.

That distinction matters. Sacrifice is something you give to God on your terms. Obedience is doing what God asked, on His terms. One looks impressive. The other requires trust.

We do this more than we realize. We’ll serve at church but ignore what God’s telling us about our attitude at home. We’ll post a Bible verse, but refuse to forgive someone. We’ll do big things for God while quietly disobeying Him in the small stuff.

God isn’t impressed by our spiritual performances when our hearts are out of alignment. He’d rather have your quiet obedience than your loud sacrifice.

Obedience is where love becomes real. It’s easy to say you follow Jesus. It’s harder to actually do what He asks when it costs something. But that’s where calling gets its integrity.

Reflect: Where in your life have you been offering God sacrifice (doing things that look good) while avoiding obedience (doing what He’s actually asked)?

Today: Identify one thing you know God has been asking you to do that you’ve been avoiding. Take the first step toward it today. Not a grand gesture. Just obedience.
