WEEK 4: CREATOR OVER THE CALL
David vs. Saul
The call is powerful, but the Creator must always come first.
Day 16: The King Who Drifted
Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:12–15 (NIV)
“Early in the morning, Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, ‘Saul has gone to Carmel. There he has set up a monument in his own honor.’… When Samuel reached him, Saul said, ‘The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord’s instructions.’ But Samuel said, ‘What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears?’”
Saul started well. He was chosen by God, anointed, and given every opportunity to lead with integrity. But somewhere along the way, his heart shifted. He stopped leading for God and started leading for himself.
In this scene, God had given Saul a clear command. Saul disobeyed it, kept what looked valuable, and then built a monument to himself. When Samuel confronted him, Saul’s first words were, “I carried out the Lord’s instructions.” But you could literally hear the evidence of his disobedience in the background.
His words said obedience. His actions said control. And that gap between what he said and what he did is where his calling started to crumble.
This is a warning for anyone who takes their calling seriously. You can start with the right heart and still drift. Success, recognition, and comfort have a way of slowly replacing surrender. You stop asking God what He wants and start telling Him what you’ve decided.
Saul’s story reminds us that calling without character collapses. The title doesn’t protect you. The platform doesn’t sustain you. Only your relationship with the Creator keeps the calling healthy.
Reflect: Is there an area of your life where you’ve been telling God, “I’m obeying” while quietly doing things your own way?
Today: Ask God one honest question today: “Is there anything in my life that I’ve been keeping for myself instead of surrendering to You?” Listen for whatever comes to mind.
