Christmas Eve and Christmas Day: The Christ Candle – Christ as the Light of the World
The Christ Candle, lit on Christmas Day, represents Jesus as the Light of the World, fulfilling the promises of hope, peace, joy, and love. This devotion celebrates His arrival as the light that overcomes darkness.
Day 29: Christ, the Light of the World
- Verses:
- John 8:12: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life."
- John 1:4–5: "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."
- Isaiah 9:2: "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned."
- Matthew 5:14–16: "You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
- 2 Corinthians 4:6: "For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ."
- Revelation 22:5: "There will be no more night... for the Lord God will give them light."
- Reflection:
On Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, we celebrate Jesus, the Light of the World, who dispels darkness and brings eternal life. John 8:12 promises that following Him leads to the light of life, unmarred by darkness (John 1:4–5). Isaiah 9:2 foresaw this light dawning on a world in despair, fulfilled in Christ’s birth. Matthew 5:14–16 calls us to reflect His light through good deeds, while 2 Corinthians 4:6 reveals God’s glory shining in our hearts through Jesus. Revelation 22:5 envisions an eternal day with Christ’s light. Advent culminates in this celebration, inviting us to live as beacons of His transformative light.
- Application:
- Reflect on how Jesus’ light has illuminated your life.
- On Christmas Eve and throughout Christmas Day, meditate on John 8:12, praying to follow His light.
- Journal about a time His presence dispelled your darkness.
- Shine His light by performing one intentional act of kindness, like helping a neighbor, to glorify God (Matthew 5:16).
- Share this hope with someone through a conversation about Jesus’ love, encouraging them to seek His light.
- Pray for opportunities to reflect Christ’s glory in your actions, letting His light guide your relationships and decisions this Christmas.
- Prayer:
Father, you sent Your Son, Jesus, to be the Light of the World. I thank You the He came to illuminate my darkness. May His light shine through me to bring glory to You and Your name. In Jesus' name. Amen.

About this Plan

These 29 daily devotionals, created by Dr. Walt Larimore, are structured around the four traditional pre-Christmas Advent candles—Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love and one final devotion for the penultimate Christ candle. Each of the first four weeks focuses on one candle, with seven daily devotions exploring a specific aspect of that theme through Bible verses, a reflection, and a prayer prompt—then, of course, the final Christmas Eve or Christmas Day devotion. All Bible verses are quoted from the NIV, 2011.
