What the Bible Says About Advent - 29 Days of Advent MeditationsSample

Day 23: Love in Sacrifice
- Verses:
- Romans 5:8: "God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
- 1 John 3:16: "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us."
- Ephesians 5:2: "Live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us."
- John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends."
- 1 Peter 2:24: "He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross."
- Reflection:
Christ’s sacrificial death is the ultimate expression of God’s love. Romans 5:8 shows He died for us while we were sinners, and 1 John 3:16 defines love by His sacrifice. John 15:13 calls this the greatest love, fulfilled in Christ bearing our sins (1 Peter 2:24). Ephesians 5:2 urges us to live this love. Advent reminds us that Jesus’ cross is the heart of God’s love, calling us to respond with gratitude and to mirror His sacrificial love in our lives.
- Application:
- How has Christ’s sacrifice impacted your understanding of love?
- Today pray Romans 5:8, thanking Jesus for His sacrifice.
- Journal about a time His love transformed you.
- Show sacrificial love by serving someone selflessly, like volunteering time or resources. Share this love with someone through a conversation about the cross, encouraging them to embrace God’s gift.
- Pray for strength to live a life of love, reflecting Christ’s sacrifice in your daily actions.
- Prayer:
Father in Heaven, thank You for Your Son’s sacrifice for me. May Your love inspire me to love others. In Jesus' name. Amen.
About this Plan

These 29 daily devotionals, created by Dr. Walt Larimore, are structured around the four traditional pre-Christmas Advent candles—Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love and one final devotion for the penultimate Christ candle. Each of the first four weeks focuses on one candle, with seven daily devotions exploring a specific aspect of that theme through Bible verses, a reflection, and a prayer prompt—then, of course, the final Christmas Eve or Christmas Day devotion. All Bible verses are quoted from the NIV, 2011.
