Walking in His Purpose: Finding Strength and Blessings in God’s Call

DAY 9 OF 9

Extending Hospitality: Lessons from Lot's Generosity

Lot’s generosity shines brightly in a moment of darkness. In a city consumed by wickedness, Lot extended hospitality to two strangers, unaware that they were angels sent by God. These men were sent to deliver a message of judgment, yet Lot, a man who feared God, demonstrated kindness and generosity. Despite the chaos, Lot welcomed them into his home and prepared a meal.

This simple act of hospitality contrasted with the evil and depravity that enveloped Sodom. It is a powerful reminder that even in a world often filled with selfishness, greed, and sin, we can be a beacon of light by showing kindness and extending a generous hand to others.

When was the last time we extended such hospitality? When relatives or friends visit, do we make them feel at home? Do we go out of our way to ensure they are comfortable, or do we let our busyness or selfishness get in the way? It’s easy to become consumed by work or overwhelmed by the demands of our daily lives. But Scripture reminds us in Hebrews 13:1-2: “Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show strangers hospitality, for some have entertained angels unawares.” What a fantastic thought, the possibility that we may be entertaining angels in showing kindness to a stranger without even knowing it.

Lot’s hospitality not only impressed the angels but also saved him and his family from the impending destruction of Sodom. When the time came for Lot and his family to leave the city, the angels led them out of harm’s way. This is deeply significant: We often find favour in God's eyes by being faithful to small things, like extending hospitality.

We may hesitate to open our homes for various reasons: the inconvenience, the time commitment, the expense, or even safety concerns. But let us remember that our homes are meant to be refuges, not just for our families but also for others. By extending hospitality, we bless those who come into our homes and create an atmosphere where God’s favor can rest.

Let us choose to emulate Lot’s heart of generosity and extend hospitality, knowing that, sometimes, in welcoming others, we are unknowingly entertaining angels.

Prayer: Lord, help us to open our hearts and homes to those You send our way. May we not be reluctant or inconvenienced by the thought of hosting, but instead, let us see it as an opportunity to bless others and find favor in Your eyes. May we never overlook the chance to extend hospitality, for we may be entertaining angels without knowing it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
