One difference between physical and verbal abuse is this - To physically attack someone you need to be in their personal space, but to verbally abuse them you just need to be heard…by anyone. Gossip might be our silent killer that actually ends up not being silent at all. It’s easier to gossip than be silent. It can be easy to engage in conversation behind someone’s back. Sometimes, we even justify it. “I trust this person so what I’m saying won’t spread.” Gossip, though, is like a tsunami – it can seem calm at the surface, but a tidal wave is building. Even folks in the first century churches fell prey to gossip. Paul stepped in like a Red Cross volunteer in a tsunami-torn landscape to remind them – and us – that how we speak to and about each other says something about us and our relationship with Jesus. They say actions speak louder than words – but sometimes actions ARE our words. How we treat one another is reflected in how we speak of one another. Are you being an example of Christ in your actions? How about your words?
