The simple formula of loving God and loving others isn’t as easy as a math problem on paper. When you’re solving a math problem, you’re using the formula to get what you want - a solution to the problem. But if loving people is just a means to an end – a way to get what you need - then we’re doing it all wrong. Loving others comes from loving God first. There’s a reason that Jesus first says to love God. The command to love others comes from the love we experience with God.
Think of an empty glass. That’s like us when we don’t have the Holy Spirit living within us. Now, envision God’s love and the Spirit’s presence within us like an endless pitcher of water pouring into the glass. The pitcher never runs dry, so eventually the glass overflows and water goes everywhere. Since God’s Spirit is ever-flowing, what we receive from Him should overflow. When God’s Spirit fills us with love, grace and forgiveness, that should overflow. When we experience joy and peace…it should spill out. THAT is overflow. Our love for others comes because God continually fills our glass to the brim and beyond. Are we sharing our overflow? Are we hoarding it? Are we wasting it?
