Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 325 OF 365

But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment (Matthew 12:36 NKJV).

Are you carefully weighing each word that you are about to speak?

James 3 cautions us about the power of words, especially those who teach: “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment” (James 3:1 NKJV). Teaching the Word is a high calling, and it requires accountability. Words have the power to bless or to wound, to lift up or tear down.

Whether we regularly instruct others from the Scripture or not, David imparts the following wisdom: “Set a guard, O LORD, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips,” writes the man after God’s own heart in Psalm 141:3 (NKJV). Let’s not confuse others with mixed messages. James assesses, “Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so” (James 3:10 NKJV).

As a Christian, choose your words carefully, for out of the same mouth should come only blessings, not curses. Embrace James’ wise words today!

Employment Point: Carefully choose your words to glorify God.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
