DAY 8 OF 15

“Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” - Matthew 14:29-30, NIV

Arguably one of the scariest things we as Christians are called to do? Step out in faith and follow God into the unknown! Maybe you’re called to a new city, or a new job, or a new role in your church, and you’re scared to step into it because you don’t know what’s on the other side. Maybe you sense God leading you out of a relationship, or a friendship, or a church, and you’re scared of what’s on the other side of that step. Or maybe you don’t know what God’s calling you to right now, but you’re anxious about the potential of something scary or life-changing on the other side.

No matter what it is for you, I imagine this is a lot like how Peter felt. He stepped out of that boat in the middle of the storm. It was a literal step of faith. But the minute he took it, fear set in, and he started to stumble. If the story ended there, that would be it. But thankfully, that’s not where it was left. Peter took that big step, and even in his faith, he was shaken by fear. But what did he do when that happened? He called out to the Lord for rescue. And that’s the same thing we can do! When we follow God’s call and take steps of faith, as shaky and fearful as they might be, we can cry out to the Lord for rescue every step of the way.

About this Plan

Written in Red

Many Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red. In the same way that we skim the newspaper to hit the headlines or train our eyes to instinctively find the highlighted passages in books, the red letters are there to help us see what’s most important on the page: the heart of Jesus’ words and teachings. We’ll look at just that—the red letters that make Jesus’ words pop off the page and come to life in our hearts as we pause, listen, and consider what He has to say.
