Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, - Colossians 3:23, NIV
One of the things that makes serving others so difficult? Having to do it! Whether you’re someone who easily serves others, someone who struggles to get out and serve others, or someone who never serves others, actually practicing what we preach and doing the work to serve isn’t easy for any of us. That’s because there are so many things that threaten to stand in the way of our serving. Maybe you don’t think you have the time, the resources, or the skills to do it. Or maybe you’re afraid to step into it on your own. Maybe it’s not something that’s ever been a priority in your life. Or maybe you need someone else to make it a priority and serve you in this season. Whatever the case, Paul’s words remind us here that there’s an easy way to get around those barriers. It’s all in our perspective!
When we see serving as something we’re doing for ourselves or even for others, it’s easier to walk away and not make time for it. But when we see it as doing something for the Lord Himself, it’s a bigger commitment. Everything we do—serving others included—is for the Lord after all. So why not let our hearts embrace that truth? Today, work to memorize this verse. Use it as a prayer when you need to be reminded of the heart behind all you do—serving included!

About this Plan

Many Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red. In the same way that we skim the newspaper to hit the headlines or train our eyes to instinctively find the highlighted passages in books, the red letters are there to help us see what’s most important on the page: the heart of Jesus’ words and teachings. We’ll look at just that—the red letters that make Jesus’ words pop off the page and come to life in our hearts as we pause, listen, and consider what He has to say.
