DAY 7 OF 15

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” - Matthew 14:27, NIV

“Don’t be afraid . . . Take courage. I am here!” At first glance, Jesus’ words here are incredibly comforting. Who doesn’t want to feel their fears melt away and courage take root in their place? With Jesus, that’s the command, the promise, and the seemingly impossible thing that can suddenly become possible. Of course, this is so much easier said than done. We’re human, after all! And that means we operate in our humanity—the sin, the fear, the doubt, all of it! Even with faith in our hearts and trust that Jesus is with us to help us face our fears, finding the courage to deal with those fears is still so difficult. Instead of beating ourselves up and wishing we could more easily step out of fear and into faith, we can take Jesus’ words to heart.

Why do we not have to be afraid? Why can we take courage? Because Jesus is with us! His presence alone is how faith can help us face our fears. “Don’t be afraid . . . Take courage. I am here!” Today, take time to write Jesus’ words down. Place them somewhere you’ll see them often as a reminder that you can face your fears with Jesus on your side.

About this Plan

Written in Red

Many Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red. In the same way that we skim the newspaper to hit the headlines or train our eyes to instinctively find the highlighted passages in books, the red letters are there to help us see what’s most important on the page: the heart of Jesus’ words and teachings. We’ll look at just that—the red letters that make Jesus’ words pop off the page and come to life in our hearts as we pause, listen, and consider what He has to say.
