so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. - John 13:4-5, NIV
Let’s go ahead and consider this the ultimate act of service! While the act of foot washing may not seem all that great to us, this was a huge deal in Jesus’ day and age. Sure, it wasn’t glamorous. It was typically the work of a servant. So for someone like Jesus, the literal Son of God, to choose to serve His disciples this way, was a big deal. Why did He do it? To show them that the ultimate act of love is to serve. Jesus served His disciples by washing their feet, not to clean their feet, but to give them a real-life example of humility and love to look back on when He was gone.
It’s an example we have today too. No, we’re not being called to literally wash someone else’s feet (at least not all the time!), but we are called to follow Jesus’ model and look for ways to serve those around us. Even when it’s difficult, even when it’s unexpected, even when it’s uncomfortable, our job is to serve as Jesus did. This week, do your best to answer this call and serve others. Find one way to do that this week. And remember, you don’t have to do it alone! Invite a friend, involve your family, or join your small group to serve others out of love the way Jesus did.

About this Plan

Many Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red. In the same way that we skim the newspaper to hit the headlines or train our eyes to instinctively find the highlighted passages in books, the red letters are there to help us see what’s most important on the page: the heart of Jesus’ words and teachings. We’ll look at just that—the red letters that make Jesus’ words pop off the page and come to life in our hearts as we pause, listen, and consider what He has to say.
