Immediately, Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.“You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” - Matthew 14:31
Most of Jesus’ words recorded in Scripture are designed to lift us up. As the physical representation of a loving God, Jesus came to show us what God is like, both in word and in deed. So it makes sense that most of His words to us are encouraging, compassionate, kind, loving, and the like. That’s also what makes these words spoken to Peter recorded in Matthew a little . . . well, surprising. Just as Peter had been shaken up in the storm and sinking in the water he faithfully stepped out on, Jesus reached out to rescue him. He then said these words to Peter. While they might read as an admonishment of sorts, these too are words spoken in love.
Jesus was reminding Peter that it was his faith that would carry him through his fears. It’s when we let doubt creep in that our faith begins to wobble. These words are a reminder of just that! When we find ourselves doubting all Jesus can do for us, we can remember that it’s our faith in Him that will sustain us. Today, ask God to help you grow in faith. When you find doubt creeping in or fear threatening to take over, ask God to remind you that He is there to steady you in any storm.

About this Plan

Many Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red. In the same way that we skim the newspaper to hit the headlines or train our eyes to instinctively find the highlighted passages in books, the red letters are there to help us see what’s most important on the page: the heart of Jesus’ words and teachings. We’ll look at just that—the red letters that make Jesus’ words pop off the page and come to life in our hearts as we pause, listen, and consider what He has to say.
