"Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear." - Matthew 14:24-26
This is one of the most well-known events recorded in Jesus’ life and ministry. If you’ve spent time at church at all, you’ve likely heard this story recounted at least a time or two. To set the scene, Jesus’ disciples were out on the water. At about three in the morning, a major storm came their way. There they were, just out there on the water in the middle of the wind and the waves, likely wondering if they were going to die right then and there. As Matthew put it, they were “terrified.” And honestly, who wouldn’t be?
While most of us probably haven’t been tossed around at sea in the middle of a storm, we can likely relate to the feeling of terror that comes with it. Life has a way of throwing us around the same way, and when it does, it’s easy for fear to take over. That’s when we must remember that, just as Jesus was walking their way, He’s walking our way too. In the middle of the storm, we can look up and find Jesus coming to comfort and help us. And that’s good news! What fears have you faced in your life? Picture those moments that have felt like a storm. Then, picture Jesus right there in the middle of it. Let it remind you of His presence amid what scares you most.

About this Plan

Many Bibles highlight Jesus’ words in red. In the same way that we skim the newspaper to hit the headlines or train our eyes to instinctively find the highlighted passages in books, the red letters are there to help us see what’s most important on the page: the heart of Jesus’ words and teachings. We’ll look at just that—the red letters that make Jesus’ words pop off the page and come to life in our hearts as we pause, listen, and consider what He has to say.
