Psalm 23 contains what is probably the most famous of all the compound Jehovah names – Jehovah is or has become my Shepherd. David was a shepherd himself and as he looked back on his life he realised that the care, protection and provision of God for him was just like the way a shepherd cared for his sheep. One of the things to appreciate as we read the Bible is that it is not written as an instructional handbook, detailed daily history or academic treatise but often as poetry to touch our souls.

David had rescued sheep from death (1 Sam.17:34-37); God rescued him from death many times. David would have led his sheep; God guided him. David would have ensured his sheep were nourished by food, water and rest; God nourished and refreshed him often. 

Jesus uses this picture and reveals Himself to be the Good Shepherd who cares for us. He guides us, protects us and forms such a loving personal relationship with each one of us that “we know his voice”. He is like the shepherd searching for the lost sheep who will not rest until He finds and restores us to Himself.
