JEHOVAH JIREH
We come now to compound names where JEHOVAH is shown to become what is needed by the use of an extra name. In this story God tests Abraham by asking him to sacrifice his son Isaac. Abraham’s obedience is staggering and is commended in Hebrews where He believed God would intervene in some way to restore Isaac (Heb.11:17-19).
Abraham was due to make a sacrifice and God provided a suitable animal just as Abraham had believed (Gen.22:8). Abraham called that place JEHOVAH JIREH – God will Provide. God sees our needs and will provide for them. Jesus emphasised the same point in Matt.6:25-34 where He explained that God would meet our needs not our greeds!
Ultimately the story of Abraham and Isaac is prophetic of God who did sacrifice His only Son. What did God provide? A sacrifice that Isaac could live and not die. What has God provided for us? “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29) that we should live and not die. The mountain of Isaac’s sacrifice was in the mountainous region of Moriah which was where Jerusalem was built, the Temple was constructed (2 Chron.3:1) and Jesus was crucified.
Prayer: Thank You JEHOVAH JIREH You provide just what I need – the Lamb of God who takes away my sin
