The Conscience!

DAY 7 OF 8

The Conscience and the Light of Revelation

The conscience does not function in isolation; its effectiveness is limited and shaped by the measure of God’s revealed knowledge available to a person. In other words, the conscience responds to light, divine light. Without that light, its judgments can be incomplete or misinformed.

We see this principle clearly in the account of Adam and Eve. They were not held accountable for disobedience until God expressly commanded them not to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It was the giving of that command, God’s revealed will, that defined the boundary between right and wrong for them. Once light was given, responsibility followed.

In the same way, the knowledge of good and evil that a believer is exposed to determines, to a large extent, what their conscience recognizes as right or wrong. As divine knowledge increases, so does moral responsibility. What may once have seemed permissible becomes clearly wrong the moment God’s light shines upon it.

This is why spiritual growth is inseparable from increasing sensitivity. As God reveals more of His truth through His Word, the conscience becomes more refined, more precise, and more demanding. It begins to register even subtle deviations from righteousness—things that may have previously gone unnoticed.

The experience of Paul the Apostle in Romans 7:7 illustrates this truth further. He acknowledged that he might not have recognized certain things, such as lust, as sin if not for the revelation of God’s law. It was the light of divine instruction that defined and exposed what was previously hidden or misunderstood.

Thus, the conscience acts according to the light it has received. When God’s truth illuminates a matter, the conscience immediately bears witness, affirming or reproving accordingly. This places a responsibility on every believer to continually seek and embrace God’s light, for with greater revelation comes greater accountability, as well as the opportunity for a more refined and holy walk with God.

About this Plan

The Conscience!

The Conscience. The spirit of the believer is not passive or dormant; it is alive and functional, designed by God to carry out three vital operations: intuition, conscience, and communion. These are the channels through which the human spirit interacts with divine realities, discerns truth, and maintains alignment with God’s will. In this series, our focus will be on the conscience, that inward witness that bears testimony to what is right or wrong. The conscience serves as a moral compass within the believer, guiding decisions, affirming righteousness, and warning against error. Let's dive in!
