The Conscience!Sample

The Conscience Defined
The conscience is that faculty within the human spirit responsible for correction and moral judgment. It reproves, restrains, and at times rebukes us, creating an inner uneasiness whenever we fall short of the glory and standard of God. It is not merely a feeling, but an inward witness that evaluates our actions in the light of what is right or wrong.
In Genesis 3:10–11 (KJV), we see a vivid illustration of the conscience at work:
“And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?”
Before this moment, Adam had no awareness of nakedness or guilt. There was no sense of shame, fear, or moral conflict. However, the instant he disobeyed God by eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, something profound was activated within him. His eyes were opened, not just physically, but morally. He became conscious of his state, and with that awareness came fear, shame, and the impulse to hide.
This inward awareness was the voice of his conscience coming alive. It revealed to him that something was wrong, that he had stepped outside the bounds of God’s command. What he once did freely without hesitation now troubled him deeply.
It is widely understood that the tree of the knowledge of good and evil introduced or awakened this moral consciousness in man, the ability to distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong. The conscience, therefore, became an internal judge, bearing witness to man’s actions and holding him accountable even without external enforcement.
From that point onward, the conscience has remained a vital part of human existence, either accusing or excusing, condemning or affirming, depending on how one responds to truth. When properly enlightened by God’s Word, it becomes a faithful guide; but when ignored or suppressed, it can grow dull and unreliable.
Thus, the conscience is both a gift and a responsibility, meant to keep us aligned with God and to draw us back whenever we begin to drift.

About this Plan

The Conscience. The spirit of the believer is not passive or dormant; it is alive and functional, designed by God to carry out three vital operations: intuition, conscience, and communion. These are the channels through which the human spirit interacts with divine realities, discerns truth, and maintains alignment with God’s will. In this series, our focus will be on the conscience, that inward witness that bears testimony to what is right or wrong. The conscience serves as a moral compass within the believer, guiding decisions, affirming righteousness, and warning against error. Let's dive in!
