The Conscience!

DAY 4 OF 8

The Various States of the Conscience

Oftentimes, we hear statements like, That person has no conscience,” or How could anyone commit such a terrible act? He must not have a conscience.” While such expressions reflect shock or moral outrage, they are not entirely accurate.

The truth is that every man possesses a conscience. It is an integral part of the human spirit, given by God as an inward moral witness. However, what differs from person to person is not the presence of a conscience, but the condition or state of that conscience.

Scripture reveals that the conscience can exist in different conditions:

  • A pure conscience (1 Timothy 3:9) — one that is clean, undefiled, and aligned with truth.
  • A good conscience (Acts 23:1) — one that functions properly, approving what is right and rejecting what is wrong.
  • A weak conscience (1 Corinthians 8:10) — one that is easily wounded, often lacking proper understanding or stability.
  • A seared conscience (1 Timothy 4:2) — one that has been hardened through repeated sin, losing sensitivity like skin burned with a hot iron.
  • A defiled conscience (Titus 1:15) — one that has been corrupted, unable to judge rightly because it is polluted.
  • An evil conscience (Hebrews 10:22) — one that is deeply stained, consistently inclined toward wrongdoing.

Therefore, no man is truly without a conscience. Rather, each individual operates according to the state of their conscience, whether it is tender and responsive or hardened and desensitized.

This understanding places responsibility on every believer: to guard, train, and continually cleanse the conscience so that it remains sensitive to God and accurate in its judgments. The quality of a man’s life and walk with God is deeply tied to the condition of his conscience.

What matters, then, is not merely that you have a conscience, but what kind of conscience you are living with.

About this Plan

The Conscience!

The Conscience. The spirit of the believer is not passive or dormant; it is alive and functional, designed by God to carry out three vital operations: intuition, conscience, and communion. These are the channels through which the human spirit interacts with divine realities, discerns truth, and maintains alignment with God’s will. In this series, our focus will be on the conscience, that inward witness that bears testimony to what is right or wrong. The conscience serves as a moral compass within the believer, guiding decisions, affirming righteousness, and warning against error. Let's dive in!
