The Conscience and the Holiness of God
The conscience in man mirrors, in a limited but real way, the holiness of God. Just as holiness is intrinsic to God’s nature, causing Him to reject evil and uphold righteousness, the conscience within man functions as an inner moral standard, condemning wrong and affirming what is right.
The Scriptures reveal God’s nature in Habakkuk 1:13 (KJV):
“Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity…”
This speaks of the absolute purity of God; His holiness does not tolerate sin, nor can it be indifferent to unrighteousness. Holiness in God is not passive; it actively discerns, judges, and responds to all that is contrary to His nature.
Similarly, the conscience operates within man as a moral witness. It reproves every act of wrongdoing and approves every expression of righteousness. It may not be perfect in its judgment, especially if God's Word does not enlighten it, but its design reflects God’s own moral nature placed within man.
Our Lord Jesus Christ demonstrated this perfectly during His earthly walk. The Bible declares in Hebrews 1:9 (KJV):
“Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.”
Jesus embodied the highest expression of divine holiness, loving righteousness wholeheartedly and rejecting iniquity completely. His life was the perfect alignment of action, desire, and divine nature.
In man, the conscience is the arena where this divine standard finds expression. It is the point of contact where God’s holiness interacts with human conduct. Through the conscience, God impresses upon us a sense of right and wrong, urging us toward righteousness and restraining us from evil.
Therefore, a man cannot truly walk in holiness beyond the condition of his conscience. If the conscience is pure, sensitive, and well-trained by truth, it will guide the believer into a life of uprightness. But if it is defiled, ignored, or hardened, it will lose its accuracy, and the life will drift from the standard of God.
In essence, the purity of one’s conscience sets the boundary for the expression of holiness in one’s life. To grow in holiness, one must cultivate a conscience that is continuously cleansed, renewed, and aligned with God’s Word.

About this Plan

The Conscience. The spirit of the believer is not passive or dormant; it is alive and functional, designed by God to carry out three vital operations: intuition, conscience, and communion. These are the channels through which the human spirit interacts with divine realities, discerns truth, and maintains alignment with God’s will. In this series, our focus will be on the conscience, that inward witness that bears testimony to what is right or wrong. The conscience serves as a moral compass within the believer, guiding decisions, affirming righteousness, and warning against error. Let's dive in!
