What the Bible Says About Advent - 29 Days of Advent MeditationsSample

Day 5: Hope in the Messiah’s Mission
- Verses:
- Isaiah 61:1: "The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me... to proclaim good news to the poor."
- Luke 4:18–19: "He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor... to set the oppressed free."
- John 3:17: "For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."
- Acts 26:23: "The Messiah would suffer and... proclaim light to his own people and to the Gentiles."
- Colossians 1:27: "Christ in you, the hope of glory."
- Reflection:
Jesus’ mission was to bring hope to the broken, freedom to the oppressed, and salvation to His followers. His life and sacrifice embody God’s heart for redemption, offering light to those in darkness. This mission continues through us, as Christ’s presence in us becomes the hope of glory. Advent invites us to embrace this hope, not just for ourselves but for a world in need. Jesus’ mission transforms our perspective, calling us to live as bearers of His light.
- Application:
- Identify one person in your life who needs hope. How can you share Jesus’ light with them this week?
- Reflect on an area where you feel broken or oppressed—bring it to God in prayer, trusting His redemptive power.
- Take a practical step, like volunteering or offering encouragement, to extend Christ’s mission.
- Meditate on Colossians 1:27, asking God to make His hope evident through your words and works.
- Prayer:
Father, thank You for sending Your Son to bring hope to the world. Use me to share Your light with others. In Jesus' name. Amen.
About this Plan

These 29 daily devotionals, created by Dr. Walt Larimore, are structured around the four traditional pre-Christmas Advent candles—Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love and one final devotion for the penultimate Christ candle. Each of the first four weeks focuses on one candle, with seven daily devotions exploring a specific aspect of that theme through Bible verses, a reflection, and a prayer prompt—then, of course, the final Christmas Eve or Christmas Day devotion. All Bible verses are quoted from the NIV, 2011.
