Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 93 OF 365

Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath (James 1:19 NKJV).

Do you consider your words before speaking?

In today’s reading, we encounter the tragic true story of Judge Jephthah and his daughter. Though he displays courage for the Lord, a rash vow costs his daughter’s life (Judges 11:29–40). Hasty speech is often unwise. Prayerful and thoughtful utterances should be the norm for children of God; they could be lifesaving!

Peter, too, should have exercised discretion before speaking at Jesus's transfiguration. He quickly suggests, “Let us make three tabernacles: one for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah” (Luke 9:33 NKJV), equating Jesus with Moses and Elijah. The Father intervenes, correcting him: “This is My beloved Son. Hear Him!” (Luke 9:35 NKJV).

So today, let’s focus on being slow to speak and using words that honor the Lord. Remember, thoughtful words are a mark of wisdom and faithfulness.

Employment Point: Prayerfully and thoughtfully choose your words to honor God.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
