Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 58 OF 365

To whom much is given, from him much will be required (Luke 12:48 NKJV).

Do you understand the pain that can come from disobeying God’s word?

In today’s reading, Moses, in his unique relationship with the Almighty, was entrusted with divine responsibilities. As we're reminded in Luke 12:48(NKJV), "To whom much is given, from him much will be required." It's a truth that echoes through the ages, urging us to reflect on our accountability to the Creator.

After the burial of his sister Miriam, God instructs Moses to gather the congregation, speak to a rock, and witness water flowing forth. A simple act of obedience, a moment of affirmation of his trust in God's Word.

Yet, the story takes an unexpected turn. Moses, overcome by something, perhaps frustration or impatience, strikes the rock instead of speaking to it. He then asks if he is the one who should serve the people the water! In that disobedient act, he inadvertently steals glory from the Almighty. A reminder that even the most faithful can stumble, a cautionary tale echoed by Paul in 1 Corinthians 10:12.

The consequence? Moses, despite his years of service, is barred from entering the promised land. It's a powerful lesson for us all. To obey God completely, renouncing any desire to claim His glory for ourselves, lest we, too, forfeit the blessings meant for us.

Employment Point: Obey God completely lest you forfeit blessings.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
