Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year TwoSample

The last will be first, and the first last (Matthew 20:16 NKJV).
Do you desire to be great in God’s Kingdom?
In today’s reading, Jesus foretold His disciples of His upcoming death and resurrection. However, they failed to understand, instead debating who would be the greatest in the Kingdom. Jesus, the embodiment of greatness, humbly served and obeyed His Father’s will, even unto death.
Jesus imparts three principles for greatness, relevant to us today:
- Future greatness springs from present service (Mark 9:33–35). Jesus, as God, illustrated this by sacrificing His perfect life for the salvation of sinners, becoming the servant of all.
- Serve those marginalized by society to please God (Mark 9:36–37). By placing a child before His disciples, Jesus emphasized the importance of helping and welcoming those most shunned by society.
- Service to Jesus yields future rewards (Mark 9:38–41). Even small acts, like offering a cup of cold water in Jesus’ name, are valued by Him as true greatness.
Employment Point: Employ the above three points for future greatness.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
