Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year TwoSample

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9 NKJV).
Does success in life come from following your heart?
David has two opportunities to eliminate Saul and claim the throne promised by God. Despite the temptation, he waits for God's timing.
In today’s reading, David's fear of perishing at the hand of Saul leads him to seek refuge among the Philistines (1 Samuel 27:1). Disheartened, he follows his own plan instead of trusting God's word. In previous devotions, we learned that God anointed David as Israel's future king (1 Samuel 16). This promise should have sustained him through trials. David showed a lack of trust in God’s promise and took matters into his own hands.
Unfortunately, David did not foreknow the words which his wise son Solomon would write when he penned, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, but whoever walks wisely will be delivered” (Proverbs 28:26).
We should prioritize God's word over feelings or self-interest, trusting in God’s promises rather than our own understanding.
Employment Point: Trust in God’s Word and not your heart.
About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
