Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 103 OF 365

The LORD has sought for Himself a man after His own heart (1 Samuel 13:14 NKJV).

How does David mirror God’s heart?

In today’s reading, one man followed his own heart, and another followed the Lord’s will.

Let’s start with King Saul. You see, Saul oversteps his role by assuming the duties of a priest (1 Samuel 13:5–23), drawing rebuke from Samuel for his disobedience. Samuel declares that Saul's kingdom will not endure because he has failed to obey the Lord (1 Samuel 13:13–14). Consequently, God chooses David, a man after His own heart, to succeed Saul (1 Samuel 13:14).

Though not covered in today’s reading, Paul highlights David's character as a man after God’s heart (Acts 13:22). David's obedience and desire to fulfill God’s will exemplify his heart for God. We should seek to have the same heart!

Employment Point: Obey all of God’s will to mirror His heart.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
