A Book Of Remembrance: Wisdom From The AgesSample

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.”
-Ernest Hemingway-
Too many times in life, we look at the accomplishments of others around us and feel like we don’t add up. We begin to feel as though life is a competition and we need to win at all costs. It can be very easy to feel that our worth is in what we do in comparison to others, as opposed to who we are in Christ and our actions in comparison to Him.
Ernest Hemingway knew where true nobility lies though. The Apostle Paul knew as well, as can be seen in today’s Bible verse. True nobility can only be found in leaving behind the former self, along with our old, sinful desires. But that is only the beginning. We must also put on the “new man.” (Ephesians 4:22-24) We must grow in Christ-like character daily.
It is our calling, and pleasure, to strive forward and reach for the prize that awaits us at the finish line of this physical life. Eternal life is the greatest nobility that could ever be. So, for today, let us not focus on what others are doing, but let us focus on our own calling, our own faults, and our own strengths. Let us be that light that shines upon the hilltop for all to see.
