Fire
The Holy Spirit is likened to fire by John the Baptist and of course on the day of Pentecost tongues of fire appeared on the disciple’s heads (Acts 2:1-4). Fire is often associated with passion and although that is true the reference is more about the Holy Spirit purifying us by revealing and removing impurities. We are refined by the fire as gold and silver is purified because if we offer ourselves to the Holy Spirit He will burn away our human weaknesses such as selfishness and greed (Psalm 12:6, 1 Pet.1:6-7). Isaiah refers to God cleansing impurities by fire and it was the prophets own unclean lips that were purified by a burning coal from the altar (Isa.4:4, 6:6-7). To come into contact with the Holy Spirit then, is to come into contact with His cleansing, purifying fire.
But that fire does not just consume, it sets us free from inhibitions and insecurities that would otherwise limit our potential. We have an enemy who tries to bind us and restrict our progress but the fire of the Holy Spirit will destroy those bonds so we are free to walk confidently and unfettered with Jesus on the Way (Jud.16:9, Dan.4:19-27).
Prayer: May I be filled with the fire of passion as my impurities and bonds are burned away by the Holy Spirit
