Pledge or deposit 

A little known symbol of the Holy Spirit is that of a seal, deposit or pledge. When you put a deposit on an item you make it yours because your pledge is a guarantee of total commitment and ownership. For example you may pay a deposit on a house or car to seal it as your own.  In this respect we have already received the promise of the Holy Spirit but as wonderful as this is, it is just a foretaste of what is to come. Although we have received the fullness of Jesus salvation now, the joy and peace we currently experience is but a preview of our future in Paradise (Heb.6:4-5). In Ephesians 1, Paul says, “Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance” (v.13-14). 

Notice that the deposit guarantees our future inheritance. We need not live in doubt or uncertainty but in complete trust and security because of the deposit of the Holy Spirit. And what is our inheritance to come?  No more tears, or death, or mourning, or crying or pain but everlasting joy in the presence of our Father, Saviour and Companion (Rev.21:3-4).
