Together - Daily Devotional

DAY 161 OF 366

Breath

An old hymn begins, “Breathe on me breath of God, fill me with life anew”. The lyrics remind us of Ezekiel’s vision in chapter 37:1-14 of the valley of dry bones which came together when he prophesied. Yet the newly formed skeletons were not alive. It was only when the breath and Spirit of God entered them that they stood as a mighty army and restoration would come. Man only became a living being when God breathed into him (Gen.2:7). Similarly, John 20:22 records Jesus with the disciples when, “he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit’”. When we receive the Holy Spirit, the breath of God fills us with life and vitality. We exhale the stale air of the polluted God-less world in which we live and exchange it for the pure air of heaven.

One of the techniques to revive a dying person is to breathe our life into their lungs by the so called “Kiss of Life”. We were “dead in sins” (Eph.2:1), but Jesus breathed new life into us by giving us the Holy Spirit. Now we can breathe the message of the gospel to others to see them revived by the breath of God.

Prayer: Breathe on me breath of God, fill me with life anew
