Oil

Oil is one of the most powerful symbols of the Holy Spirit. When David was anointed with oil, the Holy Spirit came upon him in power and he became probably Israel’s greatest king. Yet he was the smallest, youngest child ignored by his brothers and forgotten by his father. But our compassionate God seeks the lost, the neglected and the rejected because He looks on the heart. To David, the oil symbolised that despite all appearances to the contrary, he was especially chosen by God for great purpose and given special abilities. He would strengthen and enlarge God’s kingdom by encouraging God’s people through inspiring words and powerful example.

2 Cor.1:21 explains that God has anointed us with the Holy Spirit. Like David, this is not just an external application but it marks an internal transformation. We are chosen for great purpose and given special abilities to extend the kingdom of God and make a difference to our world.  It was oil that powered ancient lamps to produce light. Now the Holy Spirit comes upon us in power so the works, words and wonders of the church overcome the darkness of the world with an infusion of light and love.
