Water
Here the symbol of water is used to represent the person and effect of the Holy Spirit. Water is essential for life, vitality and fruitfulness. Throughout the Bible its importance is highlighted as necessary for plants to grow, animals to be watered, trees to flourish and humans to survive. For example, the Cedar of Lebanon only became strong, beautiful and fruitful because of the abundant waters which nourished it (Ezek.31:1-9). In the pursuit of water, Abraham dug wells, Moses struck a rock and Hezekiah diverted an underground stream. However, in today’s reading, Jesus reference to “the Scripture” is to Ezekiel’s temple, where fresh, living water flowing from within the temple brought life and fruitfulness, joy and healing even to places that were previously barren (Ezek.47:1-12).
Now this same water of the Holy Spirit is available to you and me. We are not meant to be underground reservoirs to simply contain and conserve water but artesian wells through whom blessings can burst forth to others. As these blessings of life, love, hope, healing and joy flow from us to others their own lives will flourish and they too will come to experience the source of living water.
Prayer: Holy Spirit may you flow from me like water to refresh the weary, heal the sick, bring joy to the downcast and fruitfulness to the barren and hope-less
