Who is He?
Some people would acknowledge that there is a holy spirit but describe Him as an it – a kind of impersonal force like electricity that God uses from time to time. But electricity has no feelings. The Holy Spirit can be grieved, or as the Amplified Bible puts it, “do not offend, or vex or sadden Him”. The Holy Spirit therefore has characteristics of personhood with emotions. Yesterday we also saw He has a will and a mind – “the work to which I have called them”.
Writing to the church in Corinth about spiritual gifts, Paul explained that, “All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each man, just as he determines.”(1 Cor.12:11). “He” – speaking of a person, “determines” - speaking of an independent mind, will and choice.
When Jesus explained the role of the Holy Spirit, Jesus used the personal pronouns “Him” and “He” in John 14:17, 16:8-14. The Holy Spirit is a personal being and that means we can have a personal relationship with Him. He is not an impersonal, unemotional force but a person with feelings who loves to befriend us and become our closest companion throughout our life’s journey.
Prayer: Holy Spirit I thank you that I can know you intimately as a person and not just think of you as a power
