Centre stage
In the Old Testament we rarely hear of the Holy Spirit. He is there but often seen as temporary, vague and indefinable. In the gospels He becomes more prominent but the major focus is upon Jesus so the Holy Spirit is still very much in the background. Once Jesus has risen and ascends to heaven the Holy Spirit comes to the fore and takes centre stage in the book of Acts. He begins by empowering the disciples on the day of Pentecost and in today’s reading it is specifically the Holy Spirit who calls Barnabas and Saul for His work to glorify Jesus.
In the gospels we read very much about the work that the Father called Jesus to accomplish, “I have ... completed the work you gave me to do.” (John 17:4). Now in Acts it is the Holy Spirit who is doing the calling and believers who are doing the work, “the work to which I have called them”. God the Father and God the Son are not of lesser importance, but it is God the Holy Spirit on whom the spotlight of Scripture often falls as He now appears a central person in the story of the Bible.
Prayer: May the Holy Spirit be centre stage as I seek to glorify Jesus in my life
