A Table in the Presence of Your Enemies

DEVOTIONAL

God does not wait until all your enemies have left before He seats you at the table. He sets it right in front of them.

It is one of the most quietly defiant lines in all of Scripture. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. Not after the battle. Not once the threats are dealt with. In their presence. The picture is of God calmly laying out a feast while the very things that oppose you look on, unable to touch you, while He anoints your head with oil and fills your cup until it overflows.

This matters, because shame rarely waits at the door. It pulls up a chair. Even seated at God's table, the old accusing voices keep talking. You don't really belong here. If they knew the real you. You are not enough. Many of us assume that to enjoy the table we first have to silence those voices. But the psalm says no. You can feast while they are still in the room, because your belonging does not depend on their permission.

Paul asks the questions that settle it. If God is for us, who can be against us? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who then can condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died, and is risen, and is even now interceding for you. The accuser still speaks, but he no longer holds a verdict. You are seated, anointed, and your cup is overflowing, right in front of everything that says you should not be.

So you do not have to win the argument with shame to enjoy the meal. And there is a table Jesus gave us to keep reminding us of exactly this, which we come to tomorrow.

REFLECTION

Which enemy voice most often sits down beside you at the table: shame, accusation, comparison, your past? What changes if you can feast while it is still talking?

TAKE A SEAT

When an accusing voice speaks today, do not argue with it. Simply stay seated and say, "God prepared this table for me. I am staying."

PRAYER

Father, thank You that You set a table for me in the presence of my enemies, and that the accuser no longer holds a verdict because Christ intercedes for me. Let me feast in Your presence even when the old voices are still in the room. Amen.
