You Can't Earn What's Already Set

You cannot earn a seat that was set for you before you ever cleaned yourself up.

By now you may have noticed a pattern. The empty chair was already set. Mephibosheth was invited because of a covenant, not his record. The prodigal was dressed as a son before he could say a word. In every case the table came first, and the worthiness never came into it. This is not an accident. It is the whole logic of grace.

Paul says it plainly. It is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. A gift you work for is not a gift, it is a wage. And belonging you earn is not belonging, it is employment. The table is a gift, which means the striving to be enough was always aimed at the wrong target.

And lest we think God only welcomes us once we are presentable, Paul goes further. God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Not once we improved. While we were still a mess. The seat was set while we were still in the far country.

Jesus even built this into His teaching on hospitality. When you give a banquet, He said, invite those who cannot repay you. That is precisely how God hosts. He invites those who could never repay, on purpose, so that the table is unmistakably grace.

So your part is not to earn the seat. It is to receive it, and to stop trying to pay for what is free. But here is the wonder of this table. It holds even when shame still pulls up a chair beside you, which is where we go tomorrow.

Where are you still trying to pay for a seat that is a gift? What does it do to your striving to know the table was set while you were still in the far country?

Identify one way you have been trying to earn your belonging (to God, a community, a relationship), and consciously receive it as a gift today instead.

PRAYER

Father, thank You that my seat is grace, not wages. You set the table while I was still far off and unworthy. Free me from striving to pay for what You have already given, and teach me simply to receive. Amen.
