The Table

DAY 1 OF 7

The Empty Chair With Your Name On It

DEVOTIONAL

Somewhere underneath the noise, most of us are quietly asking the same question. Is there a place for me? We can be in a crowded room and still feel it. The sense of standing slightly outside, of not quite belonging, of wondering whether anyone would notice if we slipped away. It is one of the deepest aches a human being carries.

Jesus told a story about a man who threw a great banquet and sent his servant to call the guests. When the invited ones made excuses, the master did something striking. He said go out to the streets and alleys and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame. And when there was still room, he said go out again, and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. Read that last line slowly. The host was not content to have a half-empty table. He wanted the house full. He wanted that chair filled.

This is the heart of God. He is not a reluctant host tolerating your presence. He is a Father who set a table and will not rest until there is someone in every seat, including yours. The psalmist says it tenderly: you prepare a table before me. Not a table you have to talk your way into. A table already prepared, with your name on the chair.

Over these seven days we are going to sit at that table and let it heal the question underneath everything. Because belonging is not something you earn at the door. It is something you discover when you finally sit down. And the first person we will watch take his seat had every reason to believe there was no place for him.

REFLECTION

When are you most aware of the ache of not belonging? What would it mean to believe a place has already been set for you?

TAKE A SEAT

Picture a table with a chair that has your name on it, set by God Himself. Today, when the old "I don't belong" feeling rises, gently remind yourself: there is a place for me.

PRAYER

Father, You know how often I feel like I am standing on the outside. Thank You that You are a host who wants the house full, and that there is a chair with my name on it. Help me believe there is a place for me at Your table. Amen.

About this Plan

The Table

Underneath the noise, most of us are asking one question: is there a place for me? Over seven days, sit at a table you didn't set and can't earn, and let it answer the ache of shame and not-enough. From Mephibosheth's hidden limp to the prodigal's robe and ring to the feast at the end of the story, discover that belonging was never something you earn at the door. It's what you find when you finally sit down.
