Light

DAY 7 OF 7

Where Are You Looking?

Six days of journeying with the light are behind us. In the beginning, God speaks into the darkness—and there is light—before a single star exists. Then Jesus stands in the temple and gives this light a name. His name.

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve turn away from God and see their own shadow. And on the road to Damascus, a flash of light throws Saul to the ground and turns a persecutor into a follower.

On a hill in Galilee, Jesus says to ordinary people: You are the light of the world. And in a prison in Philippi, two men with burning wounds sing songs of praise at midnight. Darkness doesn’t stand a chance.

The book of Hebrews sums it up: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

Where we look determines everything. Those who turn away from Him see their own shadow. Those who look to Jesus see the light.

At the very end of the Bible, John describes a vision. A city that needs no sun. No moon. No lights. “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” No more shadows. No darkness. Only light. This city is our future. The path to it begins today. With a simple decision. For or against the light of the world—Jesus Himself.

Perhaps you’d like to turn your life toward Jesus for the very first time today. Or maybe you want to realign yourself with Him because you turned away at some point. Both are possible. The heavenly Father is waiting for you with open arms. Come into the light. If you’d like to take this step today, you can do it with a simple prayer. Say it out loud. Because words have power.

Jesus, I come to you today. I have lived in the shadows long enough. I have been hiding. From you. From others. From myself. Today I turn around. To you. You are the light of the world. And I need your light in my life. Forgive me for going my own way. Ways that led me away from you. Thank you for loving me. Thank you for paying for my sins with your life. I believe in you. You are the way to the Father. Today I give you my life. Help me to stay in the light. Every day. Step by step. Amen.
